About the concert
Hamburg-based multi-instrumentalist and producer The Offline continues his musical journey, fusing surf, psych and hip-hop into a hybrid on his album La grande évasion, released in November.
The record was originally meant to be a 1970s-style sci-fi concept album about a spaceship travelling through deep space. Over time, however, it evolved into something more personal yet equally vast. While interstellar motifs remain in the spirit of the project, the music follows a different journey – one rooted in memory, photography, place and inner exploration. The album draws heavily on French and British film music of the era, including François de Roubaix (mysterious, retro-dramatic themes) and Brian Bennett (soul-funk-jazz), adding West Coast surf rock and analogue textures that nod to the sample-based hip-hop albums of the ’90s.
If you love film scores, old-school films like Le Samouraï with Alain Delon or classic ’90s rap albums, The Offline’s concert is a must.
The Offline explains:
“Although these tracks felt like a journey in a way, they didn’t sound like science fiction in terms of sonic aesthetics. But I realised that the idea of the sci-fi genre – the ‘Final Frontier’ and discovering new worlds – is present in all my music. I’ve always been drawn to water and wanted to live by the sea, so I wondered what a story about setting out and discovering might look like in that context. La grande évasion (‘The Great Escape’) describes exactly that longing – the possibility of escaping to other places without physically leaving your world.”
