About the concert

‍

Any Fugazi fans in the house?

As you probably remember, Joe Lally and Brendan Canty formed one of the most iconic and powerful rhythm sections in the history of post-hardcore, redefining the sound of the American independent scene.

After a long drought following the band’s hiatus, in 2016 the bassist and drummer joined forces with guitar virtuoso Anthony Pirog. Thus The Messthetics were born – an instrumental trio uncompromisingly blurring the lines between the rawness of punk, the melancholy of prog rock and the freedom of jazz. In 2021 they were joined by saxophonist James Brandon Lewis, well known to Scena MONK audiences – this will be his second appearance on our stage this year.

This atomic fusion of Fugazi energy and the jazz avant-garde quickly moved from the stage to the studio, resulting in two highly acclaimed albums – The Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis, and Deface The Currency, released earlier this year. It is mainly the latter – artistically more mature and at the same time far more confrontational – that we’ll hear at the November concert.

Today’s Messthetics, bolstered by Lewis’s mighty saxophone, are a force of nature in which – as the musicians themselves put it – punk heritage meets unbridled improvisation, offering listeners an absolutely fresh, hypnotic and passionate musical experience.
