RGG 'Astigmatic Project'

About the concert

‍

Taking on what is arguably the most important album in Polish jazz – Krzysztof Komeda’s “Astigmatic” – is no small challenge, but RGG have picked up the gauntlet.

The trio, which usually steers clear of the jazz mainstream in favour of sonic perfectionism, invited two outstanding guests to join them: trumpeter Tomasz Dąbrowski and saxophonist Adam Pierończyk.

In this way, the band’s classic formula evolved into a quintet, creating an entirely new, contemporary space for iconic compositions such as “Kattorna” and “Svantetic”.

There is no reverential homage to the legends in RGG’s take – instead, there is an organic dialogue with the absolute canon of Polish jazz, in which every single note is polished and the listener is given ample room for their own interpretation.

Band

‍

  • Łukasz Ojdana (piano) represents the new wave of European pianism – rather than imitating the masters, he seeks inspiration in literature, philosophy and theatre.
  • Maciej Garbowski (double bass) is a virtuoso with a Slavic lyricism, weaving into his playing a fascination with 20th-century Polish composition, especially the techniques of Lutosławski and Penderecki.
  • Krzysztof Gradziuk (drums) is an abstract aesthete and colourist who defies convention, making him one of the most unconventional drummers on the European scene.
  • Tomasz Dąbrowski (trumpet) is world-class, praised by Downbeat and All About Jazz, and won the 2025 Fryderyk Awards for Jazz Artist of the Year and Jazz Album of the Year.
  • Adam Pierończyk (saxophone) is a major figure of Polish jazz with twenty Fryderyk nominations, who has performed with legends such as Sam Rivers and Tomasz Stańko.
