About the concert
New Jazz Underground is an American trio redefining today’s jazz landscape. At the Newport Jazz Festival 2025, Christian McBride dubbed them “one of the hottest new groups in jazz”. The band consists of Sebastian Rios, Abdias Armenteros and TJ Reddick.
The project is a product of isolation. The musicians developed their sound during the pandemic, playing on the streets of New York and winning huge popularity with viral living-room performances watched by millions on YouTube.
With tracks such as “Dying of Thirst”, “MF Doom Suite”, “Harlem to Havana” and “cook/swing/work/relax”, the trio blends hard bop, hip-hop and modern soul while staying true to their jazz roots. NPR Music’s Lars Gotrich described their work as “stretching the boundaries of hard bop and hip-hop” – an apt summary of their bold, uncompromising approach.
