About the concert
Nduduzo Makhathini, born in the heart of the Zulu land of uMgungundlovu, is a pianist, composer and healer who weaves jazz together with Africa’s spiritual cosmology. Raised in a landscape where Zulu music and ritual have been inseparable since the days of King Dingane’s kingdom, Makhathini draws on the tradition of warriors for whom sound served to motivate and heal, while taking inspiration from John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner and Bheki Mseleku.
As a bandleader he has more than 12 albums to his name, including “Modes of Communication: Letters from the Underworld” (2020), which The New York Times named one of the best jazz albums of the year.
At Scena MONK, Makhathini will present a cross-section of his work, focusing on his latest album, uNomkhubulwane (2024), released on Blue Note Records. uNomkhubulwane is understood as a mythical rain goddess who governs fertility through the language of water.
For once, we’re hoping for a real downpour in Gdańsk that March evening.
