About the concert
Turning fifty is a special moment. For some, it’s the perfect time to surrender to the destructive forces of melancholy; others greet the passing of time with their heads held high. In autumn 2026, American trumpeter Jeremy Pelt will celebrate his golden jubilee in the best way known to civilisation – with a concert in Gdańsk.
Pelt began his professional career back in the last century. In 1998, after moving to New York, he joined the Mingus Big Band, which helped him settle into the local scene and start working with acclaimed artists such as Bobby “Blue” Bland, Ravi Coltrane and Nancy Wilson.
Since then, Pelt’s work has been regularly recognised by the industry. DownBeat magazine has repeatedly honoured him in its polls, and in 2023 the Jazz Journalists Association named him Trumpeter of the Year in the USA.
Besides playing, Pelt has also taken on the role of chronicler. Believing that the history of jazz has too often been written by critics and academics, with too little said by the artists themselves, he has been publishing the “Griot” series since 2021. Taking its name from West Africa, where bards were known as griots, the series now spans four volumes of in-depth conversations with outstanding figures of the jazz world about racial identity, culture and the philosophy of life.
Over the years, identity and belonging have become increasingly important threads in Pelt’s work. His album “Our Community Will Not Be Erased”, recorded at the end of last year, is a manifesto standing up for minorities at a time and in a world where they are discredited and torn apart.
