About the concert

‍

“Music and life are inseparable,” says saxophone virtuoso James Carter. “My elders taught me that music is culture and a way of life.”

James Carter, the saxophone virtuoso from Detroit, grew up in a house full of sound – from The Beatles to Hendrix – and his musical sensibility was shaped by his mother, who introduced him to Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. It was she who took him to his first Count Basie Orchestra concert. At 17 he shared the stage with Wynton Marsalis, and his debut, JC on the Set, released at 23, cemented his reputation as a new jazz master.

Over the following decades, Carter combined tradition with daring experimentation, collaborating with Lester Bowie, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Wynton Marsalis and Kathleen Battle, among others. In 2019 he released his first album for Blue Note – Live From Newport Jazz, a tribute to Django Reinhardt and a natural continuation of the earlier Chasin’ the Gypsy. His virtuosity and technical freedom bring Paganini to mind, which inspired composer Roberto Sierra to write the Concerto for Saxophones and Orchestra, allowing Carter to improvise within a symphonic form.

Since its 2002 premiere with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Carter has performed the piece on stages around the world to rave reviews and standing ovations. In recent years he has appeared at the Blue Note with DJ Logic and Galactic, thrilling audiences with his powerful energy and ability to cross genre boundaries. For many it’s pure musical madness; for others, it’s simply James Carter.

At Scena MONK, James Carter and his trio will play a tribute to one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time: Coltrane: A Centennial Supreme.
