About the concert
“A saxophonist who embodies the tradition and then goes beyond it” (The New York Times) – in little more than a decade, James Brandon Lewis has become one of the most acclaimed young jazz artists: a musician who has carved out his own niche with a unique blend of gospel, blues and R&B and fiery saxophone explorations of the work of John Coltrane, Albert Ayler and Sonny Rollins.
“James Brandon Lewis’s solos are like a jumbo jet,” Marc Ribot enthuses. “They need a lot of runway to take off and land. Because they’re huge – not only in terms of sound, technique, soul, ideas, energy and originality (though they have all of that in abundance), but because they carry precious cargo: the living legacy of John Coltrane.”
