About the concert
Gerald Clayton didn’t end up in the world of jazz by accident. He is the son of John Clayton (a bassist who has played with Ray Charles and Whitney Houston) and the nephew of saxophonist Jeff Clayton (who worked with Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson). For young Gerald it was perfectly natural that the legendary Monty Alexander would turn up in the living room of an evening and, after dinner, simply sit down at the family piano.
Today, this six-time Grammy-nominated pianist, composer and Blue Note Records artist sets the standard for a new generation of jazz. On his latest album, Ones & Twos, he brings together the leading lights of today’s scene to present his idea of music: fresh, unpretentious and pulsing with energy – open to modern influences and to the universal freedom that improvisation brings.
Clayton divides his time between the studio and the stage, while also pursuing an educational mission: as director of the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, he helps young talents take their first steps in the industry.
