About the concert
Ladies and gentlemen, Fred Hersch. A living legend of jazz piano.
A man who for more than three decades has helped shape – and continuously reshape – the language of this music. Improviser, composer, teacher, bandleader – Hersch’s work is a story of an endless search for new forms, sounds and means of expression.
He has released around sixty albums as a leader or co-leader. He has been nominated for a Grammy seventeen times (sic!) and continues to win the most prestigious honours in the jazz world – including the Doris Duke Artist award in 2016 and three Pianist of the Year awards from the Jazz Journalists Association.
Described by The New Yorker as a “living legend”, Hersch has long pushed the creative boundaries of jazz in many contexts – dazzling solo recitals, exploratory duets, exceptional trios and innovative chamber projects.
As a composer, he is a Guggenheim Fellow. His recent releases include the solo album Silent, Listening (ECM) and Alive at the Village Vanguard, recorded with vocalist Esperanza Spalding.
