Emma Smith makes music that deftly combines classic jazz standards with modern sensibility and subtle humour. Her latest album, Bitter Orange, is not only a tribute to jazz legends such as Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald and Julie London, but above all a stylish, intimate journey between tenderness, longing and bittersweet irony.
At the concert you’ll hear, among others, moving arrangements of songs such as Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, the long-forgotten Disney number I’m in the Middle of a Muddle, and an unusual pairing of Funny Face with My Funny Valentine.
Emma is one of the most important figures of young British jazz. Winner of the Parliamentary Jazz Vocalist of the Year 2024 award and a finalist of the Sarah Vaughan Jazz Competition 2023, she impresses with a style all her own and deep emotional power.
