Dobrawa Czocher, one of Europe’s most acclaimed cellists, comes to Scena MONK to premiere her new album, State of Matter.

Having moved from Warsaw to the Baltic coast, Czocher sketches the scale of the sea in her new compositions and lets the power of nature resound: the album is a meditation on motion, stillness and the fluid passage of one into the other. Percussive cellos intertwine with synthesisers and electronics – and, for the first time, with her multi-layered vocals.

Inspired by composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Zoltán Kodály, as well as contemporary figures including Max Richter and Steve Reich, the album exudes rhythmic subtlety and gentle intensity – music that tries to listen as much as it speaks.

Dobrawa Czocher – a graduate of the Chopin University of Music in Warsaw and the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold, and former principal cellist of the Karłowicz Symphony Orchestra in Szczecin. Co-creator of Inner Symphonies with Hania Rani (Deutsche Grammophon) and author of the debut Dreamscapes (six Opus Klassik nominations). She has performed in London, Berlin and Utrecht, and composes for theatre (the opera D’arc with Krystian Lada).
