About the concert

‍

Raised in Tel Aviv and based in New York for many years, Avishai Cohen is a musician who, like Miles Davis, has made the trumpet a tool for voicing the most poignant human emotions. There is no shortage of those in human history, which is why the artist’s latest album – ‘Ashes To Gold’ – is not only a response to the brutal recent history of his country, but also a universal attempt to capture the dialectics of history.

The title refers to kintsugi – the traditional Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. “You take the broken pieces and try to put them back together with resin mixed with powdered gold. In a way, you create beauty out of the shards without hiding the crack itself,” Cohen explains. “I think that captures what we’re going through right now. That’s what reality looks like. Our music has to describe the broken times we live in, but I still hope it also carries a glimmer of light. Even at its worst, it isn’t only dark…”
