With every note in his music, Ambrose Akinmusire makes a choice: will the sound become a prompt for meditation, or a call to battle?
The American trumpeter and composer, winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, has for 15 years deftly balanced between the mainstream and its complete deconstruction. He is as much at home in the academic aura of classic jazz as in the street culture of hip-hop.
His career is a constant search for new forms: fragile, uncompromising compositions; a tender poetics that, with the nonconformism typical of genius, can in a single moment tear down the very foundations it rests on.
